Against the pharmaceutical and chemical industry MONSANTO in the US thousands of compensation lawsuits have been brought and specifically by mid-October 2019 42,700 compensation lawsuits were brought before the US courts against MONSANTO, which was purchased by the German company BAYER for 63 billion dollars (about EUR 53,5 billion).
The reason for the judicial dispute against MONSANDO is the production and trafficking by that of the active herbicide chemical called Glyphosat, which is incriminated for causing cancer to people using it. The company denies the carcinogenic effect of the upper herbicide and thus denies all responsibility for compensation for the plaintiffs.
In 2015 the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization classified Glyphosat as “probably carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2A).
On the contrary, the Federal German agency for the assessment of public risks (BfR), the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), the American Environment Agency (EPA), the Canadian Public Risk Management Agency (PMRA), the Australian Risk Assessment Agency (APVMA), the Japanese Food Safety Committee, the New Zealand Environment Agency, (EPA), the EU Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
Three convictions have been issued against the company by U.S. primary courts to date, which award damages to the company tens of million dollars. These decisions accept that the plaintiffs were caused by cancer because of the use of the upper herbicide. The company (now BAYER) has appealed against the above court decisions. The company has stated that it is going to support appeals by any legal means. No decision has been taken on these appeals so far.
